Wil Wheaton Mental Health Update: Abusive Childhood Trauma

Wil Wheaton lives with mental health issues like chronic depression and generalized anxiety disorder.

Learning from his own experience, he supports mental health nonprofit organizations raising awareness regarding these conditions.

Wil also struggled with alcohol addiction but announced in January 2021 that he had been sober for five years.

As an adult, Wil opened up about his childhood trauma. He described his dad as abusive to him as a kid and his mother as an enabler of the abuse.

The 50-year-old also stated that his parents forced him to become an Actor against his will, which led to multiple mental health issues. He started acting as early as seven years of age.

His recently released memoir Still Just a Geek reflects his difficult childhood and emotional fallout. He shared that writing the book was often painful and not initially as relieving as he had hoped.

Wil took advantage of the opportunity as a form of therapy. “I have to say it out loud and deal with the reality of it, or I can suffer in silence,” he explained.

To make matters worse, the Star Trek Actor had a health scare when he suffered a horrific “massive, full-body seizure” in August last year. Fortunately, it was not serious, and his health improved with the doctors’ help.
